So GTA has been and gone and I have been too crazy busy with work to update.
It was super fun with the best atmosphere I have ever experienced at a BJJ comp. I really enjoyed prepping my female team mates, coaching and supporting everyone from Maromba…so many intense, good fights! It was also great to have so many interstate girls – Kate, Ash, Bree, Ashley, Kirsty and Eleni, who had the guts to jump into her first no gi comp… I am a massive fan! Comps are definitely much more fun and challenging with different and new opponents.
My division wasn’t on until later in the day and I only had one fight. I managed to win convicingly, but couldn’t finish it. However, I was so happy with my attitude at this comp. It was a major breakthrough… I was calm ,excited, nervous and just wanted to fight. I couldn’t wait for it to begin. I was focused and READY. This will be so much easier to replicate at every comp, now that I know what head space I need to be in.
In the afternoon session, I was entered in the blue-black open weight division. Not an easy one being 55kg and a blue belt, but it didn’t phase me. Round one I had the lovely Kate Wilson, one of the best purple belts in Australia, who is also my size. It was going to be a good hit out for me and a great challenge. I was happy with the first half of the fight, where I was up on advantages, but after defending an arm bar, I got swept with 30 seconds to go and couldn’t make up the points. Encouraging to know where I am at so early in the season, but most importantly, I got a good feel of what mistakes to fix so that they don’t happen again.
It was such a good opportunity to roll with girls from all over Australia and to be able to do the blue-black division at a friendly competition.
Unfortunately, I didn’t win the trip to No Gi Worlds, as I didn’t win the Open, or show enough good BJJ. Tickets went to 2 white belts and a purple belt, but I will be gunning for it again next time for sure, by concentrating on fixing my game.
Abu Dhabi Sydney Trials this weekend, and I am feeling good and READY. It will be really fun watching Lachie, Jess, Flo and Thiago compete also. CANNOT WAIT!
